A late 18th-century Continental school head and shoulders antique oil on canvas portrait of an aristocratic lady.
The artist is unknown. Undertaken by an accomplished hand.
The sitter has been identified as Sophia Hagman (a label verso confirms).
The sitter, presented in an oval, is portrayed wearing a powdered wig decorated with a flower and ringlets over her shoulders. Her blue silk dress is complimented by a shawl and silk chemise.
Presented in a decorative gilt-gesso frame with gilt oval-shaped inner slip of the same period.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images. There is craquelure to the paint surface and it is noted that a very small abrasion (albeit unnoticeable, unless observed under close scrutiny) is evident above her left shoulder within the green-grey background (please see the last image for reference). This has been retouched at some point and has been backed verso with brown paper. The overall paint surface is stable. She displays well.
