A late 18th‑century iron spiral candlestick. Also known as a rat‑de‑cave / courting candlestick, forged in iron and standing on a broad, domed wooden-turned base. Rising from the base is a tightly wound iron spiral column, around which travels a hand‑forged metal winder. This winder supports the candle cup and allows the user to manually raise or lower the candle to the desired height — a wonderfully tactile and practical mechanism typical of the period.
The iron surface has developed a deep, honest patina from centuries of domestic use, and the form has that unmistakable rustic presence associated with early lighting. These spiral‑coil examples are among the most sculptural of all rat‑de‑cave candlesticks, combining utility with a strong folk‑art aesthetic.
A beautifully authentic piece of late‑Georgian domestic lighting — simple, functional, and full of atmosphere.
Historical Background: Rat‑de‑Cave & Courting Candlesticks:
The rat‑de‑cave (literally “rat of the cellar”) is one of the most recognisable forms of early domestic lighting. These compact candlesticks were used throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries in France, Britain, and Northern Europe. Their small size and controlled light output made them ideal for:
Cellars and storerooms
Bedchambers and hallways
Courting rituals, where the candle’s burn time set the length of a suitor’s visit
Everyday domestic tasks, from sewing to writing
The spiral‑coil variant is particularly desirable. Instead of a spring mechanism, these pieces use a manual winder that travels around the coil, allowing the candle to be positioned at any height. This gave the user precise control over the light level, making it both practical and mechanically charming.
Today, collectors prize these candlesticks for their folk‑art simplicity, functional ingenuity, and the warm, intimate atmosphere they evoke.
Provenance: England. Late 18th century. From a private UK collection.
