A late 18th‑century English antique wrought‑iron hanging rushlight and candleholder, forged with the elegant, functional geometry typical of rural domestic lighting. The suspended, elongated shaft, tipped with an ornate scrolled hook and hanging ring, splits into two separate branches/arms, terminating with a circular drip pan and single, rolled, candleholder to one side, and a rushlight to the other, with a pair of jaws united by a single rivet and a decorative scrolled counter-balance. This form offers both practicality and decorative appeal.
Rushlights were an economical source of illumination, made by dipping dried rushes in tallow. This dual‑purpose example, offering both rushlight grip and a candleholder, reflects the transitional lighting practices of the Georgian period. The surface shows the deep, honest oxidation and working wear expected of authentic period iron.
A striking piece of vernacular lighting — tactile, architectural, and full of character. Ideal for collectors of early lighting, English country house interiors, or primitive metalware.
