A Late 17thC / Early 18thC English Antique Elm Close Stool.

Also known as a "necessary stool" or "night stool", close stools were used to contain a pewter or earthenware "piss pot" or chamberpot.

With a plank lid with moulded edge, over a front with three faux drawers complete with their original handles. Supported on a plinth base with bracket feet. The lid is connected to the carcass by way of its original iron butterfly hinges. The interior of the stool is void of any fittings.

Condition - very good colour and patination commensurate with age. There are traces of old worm which is inactive and long since gone. The stool has been treated too as a precautionary measure.

Size: Width 49.5cm  x Depth 42cm x Height 49.5cm (19 1/2 x 16 1/2 x 19 1/2")

This would make an ideal sofa-side storage box or side table.
