Late 17th-century Irish Antique Iron Rushlight, Supported on a Crown Base

A characterful late 17th‑century Irish wrought‑iron rushlight, forged with the unmistakable vernacular charm of rural craftsmanship. The jaws are hand‑forged with a confident, tapering grip, designed to hold a rush taper securely while allowing the light to be adjusted as it burned. The stem rises with a gentle twist. The counterbalance terminates in a small candleholder, a practical dual‑use feature found on better examples of the period.
The whole is supported on a crown‑form base, each foot splayed and shaped for stability and united by an iron ring to give stability on uneven surfaces —an evocative detail that speaks to its domestic origins in cottages and farmhouses across Ireland. The surface carries a deep, honest patina from centuries of handling and firelight.
A wonderfully sculptural piece of early lighting, both functional and atmospheric, and increasingly scarce in this untouched condition.
Provenance: Ireland. Late 17th century.
Material: Iron.
Condition: Please refer to the images. The iron has oxidised.
