This authentic English oak six‑plank boarded chest, dated 1695, is a superb survival of late Stuart furniture. Constructed from solid oak boards with pegged joints, it retains its original lock plate and features a carved floral front, adding decorative appeal to its robust form.
The chest has South Coast provenance and displays reduced end boards, typical of regional craftsmanship. Six‑plank chests were widely used in the 17th century for storing textiles, valuables, and household goods, making them both functional and symbolic of domestic life.
Provenance: 1695 (Late 17th Century). England, South Coast provenance.
Material: Oak, six‑plank boarded construction.
Features: Carved floral front, original lock plate, reduced end boards, dated inscription “1695”.
Condition: Please refer to the images. Surface wear and losses commensurate with age. The end boards have been reduced in height and again have some losses. The original iron hinges have been replaced with later iron strap hinges.
