A rare and tactile late 17th‑century English leather bombard, crafted and repurposed from a leather blackjack to serve ale, cider, or small beer in tavern or domestic settings. These robust vessels were made from thick, stitched leather, hardened and shaped to withstand heavy use — often passed hand-to-hand in communal gatherings.

This example stands 16 cm tall, with a cylindrical body, slightly flared base, and a spouted rim for pouring. The surface has developed a rich, warm patina, with deep browns and ochres that speak to centuries of handling. The seams are stitched traditionally, and the form retains its full integrity despite expected wear and surface cracking.

Leather bombards of this scale are increasingly scarce, especially those with surviving spouts, which were prone to damage. The vessel’s sculptural presence and utilitarian charm make it a standout example of vernacular drinking culture in the late Stuart period.

Provenance: England. Late 17th century.

Material: Hardened leather with stitched seams.

Condition: Spouted rim for pouring. Surface wear, cracking, and patina are consistent with age. Structurally stable. Photos show the actual item.

Dimensions: Height 16 cm ( 6 1/2”)

This is a richly patinated relic of Stuart‑period tavern life — built to serve, and still radiating the warmth of centuries of use.
