A late 17th-century English antique oak coffer/chest.
Sourced from the private property of a clergyman in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Joined construction.
With it's original three-panelled top inset between carved rails and a moulded front edge, joined to the carcass by way of two original wire hinges. The front has carved horizontal and vertical rails, a brass key escutcheon of oval form, and is again inset with three panels and a brass key escutcheon. The end boards again have the same pattern upon the horizontal and vertical supporting rails, and each end is inset with a single panel. The lid opens to reveal an interior fitted with its original till. The baseboards, whilst paper-lined, are original. Supported overall on stile feet.
It is interesting to note that the key escutcheon is flanked on either side by the remains of an old wax seal. The coffer also has the addition of early 19th-century iron carry-handles at each end.
Provenance - as mentioned above.
Condition - Please refer to the images. The lock no longer functions. The hasp is missing from the internal till. This remains a very functional piece of furniture
