A late 17th-century English antique carved date stone, deeply incised with symbolic and personal markings. The top is carved with a cross flanked by two stars — a motif often associated with protection and divine guidance. Beneath this, the initials "R & RE" are boldly cut, likely commemorating a couple or family, and the date "1686" anchors the piece in the reign of James II.
This evocative fragment of architectural history may have once adorned a threshold, lintel, or gable of a rural dwelling or chapel. The stone’s weathered surface and crisp carving offer a compelling blend of age and legibility, making it ideal for display indoors or out.
A poetic survivor from the Restoration period, rich in character and symbolism.
