Late 17th Century Swiss Antique Folk-Art Decorated Table Top Box Dated "1687"
A late 17th Century antique folk-art decorated wooden chest of small proportions.
Swiss origin.
Most probably made as a dowry chest to commemorate a marriage, the lid is decorated with poker-work and chip-carving. The front board is painted with a date of "1687" with two arcades below, each flanking a central iron key escutcheon and, featuring stylised flowers and foliage. The base board edges are again decorated with chip-carving.
The lid is joined to the carcass by way of its original iron hinges. The lock remains.
Provenance - Acquired directly from the European continent.
Condition - as per the images. The key is missing. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
Size - Width 32 cm x Depth 21 cm x Height 18 cm (12 2/3" x 8 1/3" x 7").
