Of good weight and colour, the shaped drip-pan above a knopped baluster stem, raised on a stepped, moulded circular, skirted base. The underside of the base shows clear concentric turning (skimming) rings from finishing on a treadle lathe, together with a small raised turning-boss to the centre — construction consistent with wrought pewter of the 17th to 18th century rather than later industrial spun-sheet work, and the basis for revising the date given at intake.
The initials "…C F D…" are engraved on the upper surface of the base (a fourth letter is obscured by wax) — evidently an owner's mark rather than a maker's touchmark, and a pleasing trace of the piece's working history. Remnants of old wax survive within the socket, and there are spots of later red wax on the base, evidently from incidental use rather than anything to be alarmed by.
Provenance: England. late 17thC-early 18thC.
Material: Pewter.
Condition: An old, uniform grey-black oxidised patina throughout, entirely consistent with age and an undisturbed surface. No significant dents or splits noted.
