A Welsh antique oak six-plank coffer dating back to the latter part of the 16th Century, that would now make an ideal coffee table.
Joined construction.
With a plank top decorated with scratch-carved and punch-worked decoration and chip carving at each end, above a front panel decorated with bullseyes, scratch and punched carving, and chipped-carved decoration to the outer edges.
The lid (connected to the carcass by way of two iron hinges) lifts to reveal a void interior.
Superb colour and patination.
Condition - Please remember that this chest is in excess of 440 years old! One would expect there to be repairs and alterations. The coffer has been reduced in height. Its hasp is missing and the lockplate has been replaced. The top may well have been reversed historically. There is a minor timber fillet to the lid where the hasp would have originally been (which is now at the back), however, these repairs and alterations do not detract from this chest which still displays very well.
