A fine and rare Welsh antique oak chest dating to the late 16th century, circa 1580. Crafted in joined construction with a plank top, nulled apron, and two deeply incised panels, each with a lozenge and bullseye carved decoration, this coffer exemplifies the robust elegance of Tudor-era furniture.

The lower supporting cross-rail is carved with nulling and the chest is supported on raised stile feet, each decorated with punchwork decoration.

It retains its original lockplate.

The interior is void of any fittings.

Its compact proportions make it ideal for both display and practical storage. A piece of historical significance, offered by Holt Antiques at Walsingham Mill.

Provenance: Welsh. Late 16th Century.

Condition: missing hasp.  There is a minor timber fillet to the lid where the hasp would have originally been, and the lid has an elongated timber fillet however these additions do not detract from this chest which still displays very well.  The hinges have been replaced historically. Two additional batons have been added to the underside of the lid to give it further support. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: With 86.75 cm x Height 65.5 cm x Depth 56.5 cm (34.17 inches x 25.79 inches 22.24 inches)

Additional Historical Context:

Welsh oak coffers from the late 16th century were central to domestic life, serving as secure storage for textiles, valuables, and household goods. These chests were often made by local joiners using native oak and featured:

  • Joined Construction: Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, a hallmark of Tudor craftsmanship.

  • Nulled Decoration: Repeating carved patterns, often on aprons or rails, symbolizing continuity or protection.

  • Incised Panels: Geometric or foliate motifs carved into the front panels, reflecting regional styles.

  • Function: Used as dowry chests, bedding storage, or even seating in multi-purpose rooms.

This example, with its incised detail and nulled apron, is typical of North and West Wales, where such chests were prized for both utility and display.
