Late 16th Century English Antique Oak Transitional Coffer or Chest
Late 16th Century English Antique Oak Transitional Coffer or Chest
An unusual and rare late 16th Century English antique oak transitional coffer or chest, showing the evolution from a simple six-plank to a more sophisticated decorative piece of furniture, highly fashionable in its day!
Peg-joined construction.
The plank top with moulded thumb-nail edge joined to the carcass with later wire hinges; with a three-panelled front, the carved apron with lunette frieze and three panels carved with lozenges.
Supported on raised stiles and solid end boards.
Condition - The coffer has seen life! It was converted in the late 16thC from a simple six-plank chest to a more fashionable joined oak coffer, well, at the front at least! The back retains the original front board with the remains of the lock keep and the lid at the back retains the marks where the hasp was once situated. The till (candle box) is missing but overall, this is as good as you will see for the period. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
