A late 16th Century Dutch antique carved oak portrait panel depicting "Justice" after the original drawing by Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1617) and, engraved by his stepson, Jacob Matham (1571-1631).
Hendrick Goltzius, or Hendrik, was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter. He was the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, or Northern Mannerism, lauded for his sophisticated technique, technical mastership, and "exuberance" of his compositions.
Jacob Matham, of Haarlem, was a famous engraver and draftsman too in his own right.
Works by Goltzius are in a number of museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Matham's works can also be found in a number of museum collections including The British Museum.
This fine panel that we offer for sale, depicts Justice looking left with a sword in her right hand and scales in her left. She is surrounded by scrolls, swags, and a floral rosette at her feet.
Condition - as per the images with an old waxed surface. There is age-related surface wear and losses to the outer edges. The carving displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
