A rare and expressive carved oak figure of Saint John the Evangelist, depicted kneeling in a posture of devotional ecstasy, the right hand raised with fingers extended in a gesture of witness or proclamation. The face is sensitively carved with fine, individualised features, the hair falling in long centre-parted waves to the shoulder in the conventional depiction of the youthful Beloved Disciple.
The drapery is carved with considerable skill and vitality, the robes falling in the deeply undercut, swirling folds characteristic of the late Gothic tradition of Northern Europe. The figure retains traces of its original gesso ground beneath the now-stripped surface, testament to its great age.
This figure almost certainly formed part of a Calvary or Crucifixion group, in which Saint John traditionally kneels to the right of the Cross, his raised hand and upward gaze directed toward the figure of Christ. Such devotional groups were produced in significant numbers across the Franco-Flemish and Rhenish workshops of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, and comparable examples are held in major museum collections across Europe.
A piece of considerable rarity, devotional power, and scholarly interest.
Provenance: Late 15th-Century/early 16th-century. Northern Europe.
