A simpler carved oak misericord dating to the late 15th century / early 16th century. Though less elaborate than its more ornate counterparts, this piece retains the quiet dignity of medieval ecclesiastical furniture. Its restrained geometric carving incorporates roundels and stylised foliage and compact form, speak to the functional essence of misericords: discreet supports for clergy during long services.
The oak has developed a warm patina over centuries, offering collectors a tangible link to the daily rhythm of medieval worship. This example embodies the balance between utility and devotion, making it a rare survival of sacred craftsmanship.
Provenance: France. Late 15th / early 16th century. Acquired directly from a private collection based in Norfolk, England.
Condition: Please refer to the images. The elongated horizontal board appears to have been reduced in length. Verso, there are a number of white paint splatters. The carving displays well.
