A large and impressive mid 17th-century English antique bronze mortar. Please note that no pestle is included with the sale.

With a flared rim, the body with two lugs/carry handles and bearing a dated of "1649" between two decorative bands. To the reverse, the initials "IF" are cast and the mark of Thomas Sturton I is scratched into the mortars surface.

The Sturton Foundry was run by eight members of the Sturton family and was active from 1630 until the early 18th-century. They were prolific makers of copper-alloy vessels and mortars. They used a variety of scratched marks, individual to each founder, on their wares.

Supported on an associated turned wooden sockle/stand of later date.

Condition - the base has worn through historically and has an ancient bronze alloy repair causing it to bulge. The wooden socle has been used to ensure that that the mortar can continue to be used/displayed in an upright position. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
