A rustic floor-standing rushlight / rushnip.
Late 18th-Century. English origin.
With a finial formed as a hook over a plain stem, the rise-and-fall mechanism with sprung strap adjoins a single nip with long tapering jaws which are united by a pivot with the counterweight formed as a decorative scroll. Below, the remaining plain stem is decorated with a knop, which also acts as a "stop" to prevent the rise-and-fall mechanism dropping too low.
Supported overall on a naively-shaped wooden base.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images. The iron jas some age-related surface pitting and oxidation. The wooden base also haa some age-related some surface splits. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
