A substantial and highly tactile Irish dairy bowl in sycamore, late 18th or early 19th century, circa 1780–1820.

Turned from a single block of timber, the bowl is of broad, shallow form with a gentle taper to the walls, retaining honest tool marks from the turner's gouge and its original dry, completely untouched surface — softened and burnished by generations of daily use in the Irish farmhouse dairy.

Sycamore was the timber of choice for dairy work throughout Britain and Ireland: close-grained, easily scoured clean, and — crucially — imparting no taint or flavour to milk, cream or butter. Bowls of this generous scale were used for settling milk and skimming cream, standing on the slate shelves of the dairy in constant service. Precisely because they were worked so hard, most were scrubbed thin, split, or discarded; large survivors with their dry original surface intact are increasingly difficult to find, and this example, at 17 inches across, is a particularly good one.

Irish vernacular woodware has a devoted following, and pieces of this quality appeal equally to the serious treen collector and to those furnishing farmhouse, cottage and country kitchens — where a bowl of this scale makes a striking centrepiece for a scrubbed table or dresser, filled with fruit or displayed simply on its own considerable merits.

Provenance: Ireland, circa 1780-1820.

Material: Sycamore

Condition: Minor age-related wear; structurally sound. Traces of old worm, inactive and historic, treated as a precautionary measure. Please refer to the images.

Dimensions: 17 in diameter × 4 in high (43 cm × 10 cm)
