A large, rustic late 18th-century coopered oak jug, bound with five iron hoops and fitted with a shaped iron handle and pouring spout. Crafted from oak staves using traditional barrel-making techniques, this robust vessel exudes a blend of country charm and utilitarian elegance. Its bulbous form and oxidised ironwork suggest it was designed for heavy domestic or tavern use—possibly for ale, cider, or water. One of two available, this jug stands as a testament to vernacular craftsmanship and enduring materials.

Historical Context
Coopered vessels like this jug were essential in 18th-century rural life, crafted by skilled coopers who specialised in watertight containers for liquids. The technique—binding shaped wooden staves with iron hoops—was used for barrels, buckets, and jugs alike. This example, with its iron pouring spout and handle, reflects the functional ingenuity of the period, likely serving in a tavern or farmhouse where durability and ease of use were paramount. Such jugs are now prized for their folk-art appeal, tactile surfaces, and connection to pre-industrial domestic life.
