A large and impressive oil on canvas depicting a three-masted, fully ship-rigged British merchant vessel running under full sail in open waters. The ship is portrayed with considerable authority: all square sails set and drawing well, the Red Ensign flying at the stern identifying her as a vessel of the British merchant fleet. A smaller sailing craft is visible in the middle distance to port, and a low coastline or landmass recedes into the background to starboard. The sky is animated with billowing cumulus clouds against a blue background, and the sea is rendered with lively movement — green-grey swells with white water at the crests.

The composition follows closely the conventions of the great Victorian ship portraitists — Knell, Walters, and their contemporaries — in its three-quarter bow presentation, its handling of light on the canvas and rigging, and its documentary fidelity to the vessel's rig.

The work is unsigned and, whilst 19th-century in character and convention, is considered to be of 20th-century execution: the craquelure present across the surface is the product of a crackle varnish rather than the natural ageing of period pigment, a technique employed by accomplished later painters working deliberately in the earlier tradition.

Provenance: Unknown.

Material: Oil on canvas. Presented in a substantial period-style gilt-gesso frame.

Condition — The surface craquelure is consistent and well-integrated throughout. There is very minor paint wear to the lower left, approximately 1 cm in length, where the frame has at some point made contact with the canvas; this is not detrimental to the overall presentation and could be addressed with minor retouching. The frame carries a small abrasion to the upper left, approximately 3 cm in length, which will be made good before shipping.

Dimensions: Without frame 100cm x 75cm (39 1/2" x 29 1/2") / With frame 123cm x 99cm (48 1/2" x 39")
