Large & Impressive 15th-Century Flemish Antique Carved Oak Retable Panel Depicting Christ & Doubting Thomas

Once forming part of a retable (a frame or shelf enclosing decorated panels or revered objects above and behind an altar) we are delighted to offer for sale this 15th-century carved oak panel which once formed part of a much larger screen.

Carved in relief, the panels portrays Christ, risen from the dead, showing the Apostle Thomas, his wound to his chest caused by the Lance of Longinus when he was upon the cross.

This depiction is a reference to the Gospel of Saint John where the Apostle Thomas, who, in John's account, refused to believe the resurrected Jesus had appeared to the ten other apostles until he could see and feel Jesus's crucifixion wounds himself.

The phrase "Doubting Thomas" is derived from this reference. This term refers to a sceptical individual who refuses to believe without direct personal experience. 

The pediment to the panel is carved with four quatrefoils and below two of the Apostles are portrayed in the background and look on as Thomas places his forefinger in Christ's wound.

Provenance - Acquired directly from a private German collection.
