A large early 19th‑century turned sycamore dairy bowl, beautifully wide and deeply tactile, with the pale honeyed tone and fine grain that make sycamore the classic timber of the dairy. Bowls of this scale were used for cooling, mixing, and general dairy work, and this example carries all the quiet, work‑worn honesty of a piece that has lived a long, useful life.

The interior shows the soft, circular tool marks of hand‑turning, now mellowed by two centuries of handling. The exterior is gently rounded, with linear decoration and with a pleasing weight and a wonderfully natural patina. An old split is visible — stable, long‑settled, and entirely consistent with the shrinkage and movement of early sycamore. It adds to the authenticity rather than detracting from it.

A superb decorative bowl with real presence: sculptural, functional, and unmistakably early.

Provenance: England. Early 19thC.

Material: Sycamore.

Sycamore was the preferred timber for dairy equipment throughout the 18th and 19th centuries because it is: naturally pale and hygienic; resistant to tainting flavours; easy to turn on early lathes; and capable of developing a beautifully smooth, silky surface with use.

Large bowls like this were indispensable in rural households and are now increasingly scarce in such generous proportions.

Condition: Good, honest antique condition. Old split, stable and expected for early sycamore. Wear, marks, and surface movement consistent with dairy use. Dry, natural colour with excellent early patina. No modern refinishing.

A strong, characterful example with superb scale.
