An evocative and finely worked early 18th-century English needlework panel, richly embroidered in silk and metallic threads using both flat and raised stumpwork techniques. The scene portrays the biblical Easter miracle—Christ, newly risen, presenting Himself to the Three Marys. This moment of divine revelation is rendered with expressive detail, from the flowing robes and radiant halo to the emotive gestures of the witnesses.
The panel’s composition suggests it was created for devotional display, possibly as part of a larger ecclesiastical textile or framed for private contemplation. The use of stumpwork—where elements are padded and stitched to create dimensional relief—adds depth and drama to the sacred narrative.
The Three Marys are three women from the Bible who are said to have been the first witnesses to the Easter miracle:
Mary Magdalene: A faithful disciple who was present at the crucifixion and resurrection. She was the first person to see the resurrected Jesus.
Mary, the mother of James and Joseph: Also known as Mary of Clopas, she was present at the crucifixion and helped anoint Jesus' body after his resurrection.
Mary of Bethany: Anointed Jesus' head with oil before his crucifixion.
The Three Marys represent the human response to the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ.
This fine work is set within an extensive landscape, woven with silk and chenille threads, raised stumpwork and incorporating wool work and tapestry sections.
Undertaken by an unknown hand.

Historical Context
During the early 18th century, religious needlework flourished in England, often commissioned for domestic or ecclesiastical use. Scenes from the New Testament were popular subjects, especially those emphasizing resurrection and redemption. This panel exemplifies the devotional craftsmanship of the period, blending theological narrative with textile artistry. The Three Marys—Mary Magdalene, Mary of Clopas, and Mary Salome—were central figures in resurrection iconography, and their presence here underscores the panel’s spiritual significance.
