This bombard has seen life!

Of large size, this early 18th-century leather bombard/jug stems from a very British tradition where leather, formed over a mould whilst wet, was stitched together to form both tankards (known as black jacks) and the larger jugs, referred to as bombards.

This example appears to have been reduced in height due to wear and the handle repaired and made stronger with the addition of hob-nails and rivets as well as hand-stitching. These repairs are in excess of 200 years old themselves and add wonderful character to the vessel.

The item bears an old repository label to the underside of the base.

Provenance - Ex-private collection, Castle Acre, Norfolk.

Condition - As per the description above and the images. The bombard displays well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size - Height 25.4 cm x Diameter to tip of carry-handle 29.2 cm (10" x 11 1/2")
