A fine 18th‑century Dutch brass Heemskerk candlestick, standing 29 cm tall and displaying the bold, architectural silhouette associated with the naval traditions of the Dutch Republic. The Heemskerk type takes its name from Jacob van Heemskerck (1567–1607), the famed Dutch admiral whose flagship, De Heemskerck, became emblematic of the Republic’s maritime power. The strong, baluster‑driven profile of these candlesticks echoes the heavy, practical brasswork used aboard Dutch ships during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
By the 18th century, the Heemskerk form had become a widely recognised domestic style across the Netherlands and the wider Low Countries. Its distinctive features — a broad, stepped base, multi-knopped architectural stem, drip pan and deep candle socket — reflect both maritime durability and the evolving tastes of Dutch households during the period.
This example is particularly well‑proportioned, with a warm, even patina and excellent weight. The stepped base is crisp, the stem well‑turned, and the socket retains its original 18th‑century form. A strong, honest piece of Dutch brassware with real presence.
Historical Background
The term “Heemskerk candlestick” refers not to a town or a maker, but to a Dutch East India Company (VOC) vessel—De Heemskerck—lost in the early 17th century. When the wreck was excavated centuries later, divers recovered a cache of heavy, architectural brass candlesticks with a distinctive stepped base and baluster stem. These finds became the reference point for the entire type.
Why collect them?
Heemskerk candlesticks appeal to collectors because they combine:
Documented archaeological provenance
VOC maritime history
Robust sculptural presence
A form that bridges naval and domestic life
The shipwreck connection gives them a narrative richness that few other candlestick types possess.
