A large 17th-century Italian antique apothecary's jar with two handles, originating from Montelupo, Italy.

Ideal for a floral arrangement or for display by itself.

The tin-glazed, earthenware vase is decorated with a pattern of stylised Persian-inspired "alla palmetta", typical of  Montelupo ceramics*. The rim and foot rim are decorated with bands of ochre and blue.

*Various examples of this type of decoration are illustrated in Fausto Berti's publication "Storia della ceramics di Montelupo (1999), Vol III, Cat. Nos. 113-121.

Provenance: Found in a former chemist's shop in Italy and held within an Italian private collection since the 1970s until acquired by us.

Condition - surface wear commensurate with age. No cracks. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
