Large 17th Century Italian Antique Carved Wood Sculpture Depicting The Bronze Serpent

A finely carved 17th Century Italian antique carved wooden sculpture (possibly oak or related species) of the Bronze Serpent entwined around an Orb originating from an Italian church.
The carving has been covered with a thin layer of gesso and then painted and gilded and is presented on a plinth base.
The Orb represents Godly power and this sculpture is likely to have been the base to a much large piece where a Cross was set into the top (hence the rebate at the top of the Orb.
The Bronze Serpent was a visual representation of the wrath of God against a grumbling and complaining people. The Cross of Christ would have been a visual representation of the wrath of God against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. The Bronze Serpent, representing the wrath of God, also represented the turning away of that wrath.
Condition - as per the images. There is age-related surface wear. The carving displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
