This impressive pewter twin‑handled cup bears a large applied medallion depicting the royal arms of James II, with the crowned shield supported by the lion and unicorn and surrounded by the Latin legend “JACOBUS II DEI GRATIA MAGNAE BRITANNIAE FRANCIAE ET HIBERNIAE REX FIDEI DEFENSOR” — “James II, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith.”
The medallion is a genuine late‑17th‑century royal portrait badge, originally struck during the reign of James II (1685–1688). These badges were produced in various metals and used for political display, loyalty tokens, and commemorative purposes.
The cup onto which it is mounted may be of the same period or possibly later (touchmarks are worn), created to showcase the medallion in a decorative and functional form — a practice not uncommon among collectors of royal and Jacobite material.
The vessel has twin scrolling handles and a broad, rounded body. Condition is worn, with dents, pitting, and surface marks consistent with age and use. The medallion remains crisp and legible, retaining its strong heraldic presence.
A striking decorative piece with genuine Stuart‑period royal iconography, appealing to collectors of pewter, royal memorabilia, and Jacobite‑related material.
