A fine late Stuart pewter charger bearing a rare set of front-rim pseudo-hallmarks, struck in the manner of silver assay marks.
A handsome English pewter charger of good diameter — 40cm (approximately 16 inches) — with a boldly cast triple-reeded rim, a form produced during the narrow window of circa 1675 to 1715 and among the scarcest of all English pewter rim treatments.
The broad rim surrounds a generous well with the rich, even patina of three centuries of careful use. Particularly noteworthy are the four pseudo-hallmarks struck in a row on the front face of the rim — small, shaped shields each bearing a repeated device — applied in direct imitation of silver assay marks, a practice characteristic of English charger production before approximately 1730 and one which effectively confirms the late Stuart date of this piece.
The maker remains unidentified but was clearly working within the established English pewterers' guild tradition, producing wares of sufficient ambition to warrant the full complement of mock hallmarks.
A characterful and dateable piece, closely related in period and type to the finest surviving examples of late 17th century English sadware.
Provenance: England: Late 17th century / early 18th century.
