A striking 17th‑century carved stone memento mori
This large carved stone panel dates to the 17th century and presents a classic memento mori composition. Two symmetrical winged figures face one another in high relief, their wings sweeping outward to frame a central hourglass — the most enduring symbol of the passing of time and the inevitability of mortality.
The carving is bold and confident, with deep tooling marks, strong modelling, and a sculptural rhythm typical of early modern funerary and architectural stonework. The semicircular top and stepped lower edge suggest it once formed part of a larger architectural or commemorative scheme, possibly a lintel, tympanum, or funerary surround.
Symbolism and presence
The hourglass, flanked by winged figures, is a potent emblem of transience — a reminder that time runs equally for all. These motifs were widely used in 17th‑century Northern European funerary art, and this example has a particularly expressive, almost folk‑sculptural quality that gives it great decorative impact.
