A striking architectural fragment in the Gothic taste, carved in pitch pine in the form of a pointed lancet arch. The arch is made in two halves meeting at the apex. Its soffit is carved with bold cusping that shapes the opening into a stylised trefoil, a motif borrowed directly from medieval window tracery. The surrounding frame is built up with applied pine mouldings and deeply carved blind openings to either side, which give the piece real depth and a play of light and shadow from every angle. Generous traces of the original gesso and gilding survive across the surface, the gold glinting against the warm amber of the pitch pine and lending a richly time-worn quality.
The form and the gilded finish suggest it once belonged to a richly decorated ecclesiastical or Gothic Revival scheme, perhaps a reredos, an organ case, a chancel screen or a canopied niche. Pitch pine, prized by Victorian church builders for its strength, resinous figure and resistance to decay, was the timber of choice for such fittings throughout the Gothic Revival.
Highly decorative and sculptural, it makes a statement mounted on a wall, set on a console or shelf as an architectural object, or incorporated into a period or ecclesiastical-style interior.
