19th Century English Antique Treen "Goose Wing" Knitting Sheath - Made As a "Love Token"

Once common during the 18th and 19th centuries in the North of England, knitting sheaths were often attached to an individual's belt and used to hold a knitting needle in a stable position whilst the other two hands were used for the task of knitting itself.
Like many examples, this item is made of treen (wood), possibly walnut or mahogany, and is of typical "goose wing" shape with inlaid decorative brass pique work and inlaid bone. The latter forming a lozenge flanked by two love hearts. The handle is turned and has an aperture at the end where the knitting needle would have been placed.
Bearing the initials "MM" in brass pique work, too, with the symbolism, it is likely that this piece was made as a love token for someone's sweetheart.
These sheaths offer an insight into the social history of knitting and domestic life in times gone by.
