This impressive dome‑topped iron‑bound chest, dating to the 16th century, is a superb survival of early European craftsmanship. Constructed with heavy timber and reinforced by iron straps, lockplate, and side handles, it embodies the strength and security prized in Renaissance storage furniture.
The chest is mounted on a 17th‑century base with ball feet, giving it both stature and decorative appeal. Such pieces were used in country houses and merchant homes for storing valuables, textiles, and documents. Its Continental origin (possibly German or Northern European) and robust design make it a significant addition to collections of antique furniture, coffers, and historical storage chests.
Provenance: Chest 16th Century; Stand 17th Century. Possibly German or Northern European. The chest bears an old Swedish antique dealer's label on the underside of the lid.
Material: Timber with iron bindings, lockplate, and handles.
Features: Dome‑topped lid, iron straps, lockplate, side handles, mounted on ball‑foot stand.
Condition: Please refer to the images. There is surface wear commensurate with age. The chest no longer locks, albeit keys are included.
Dimensions: Length approx. 84 cm x width 47 cm x height 80 cm (33" x 18 1/2" x 31")
This chest is not only a functional antique but also a statement piece of historical storage furniture, offering collectors a tangible link to the domestic life of Renaissance Europe.
