A rare "grand tour" inkwell made in Pesaro, Italy, circa 1800.
Made from earthenware, in the form of a classical sarcophagus, the shaped lid over a bowl of rectangular form, standing on four lion-paw feet and a stepped rectangular base. Decorated in white tin-glaze.
The lid lifts to open an interior with two compartments. One retains it's oriignal well, possibly used for "pounce", the powder used for drying wet ink. The other well is missing.
