A striking sculptural fragment steeped in maritime and decorative history, this 18th-century carved wooden horse’s head (most probaly a mythical mer-horse or hippocampus) was salvaged from a Venetian gondola—an iconic vessel synonymous with the grandeur and pageantry of Venice. Likely once part of a larger ornamental fitting, the carving captures the spirited elegance of the horse in motion, with finely modelled features and flowing contours.
Traces of original gilding remain across the surface, hinting at its former opulence and the rich decorative traditions of Venetian craftsmanship. The wood has aged beautifully, with a warm patina and subtle wear that enhance its sculptural presence. Though fragmentary, the piece retains strong character and visual impact, making it a compelling decorative object or collector’s curiosity.
