A finely carved English oak term dating to the late 17th century, depicting a symbolic female figure—very likely an allegory of Hope, typically personified as a figure holding an anchor. The figure is carved in high relief, with flowing drapery and a poised, upward‑looking stance that gives the piece a quiet, contemplative presence.
About the Symbolism:

The Anchor: In Christian and general symbolism, the anchor is a strong emblem for hope, as referenced in the New Testament (Hebrews 6:19) as an "anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast".

Common Depictions: Hope is usually depicted as a woman in classical robes, often leaning on or holding an anchor.

Other Associations: The anchor can also symbolise eternal life, steadfastness, or serve as a tribute to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers.

Provenance: England. 17th Century.

Condition: Please refer to the images. There is some age-related surface wear.

Dimensions:

Height: 30 cm (11.8 inches)

Width: 7 cm (2.7 inches)

Depth: 4.5 cm (1.7 inches)

This fragment displays beautifully on its own as a sculptural object. The oak has developed a warm, rich patina over more than three centuries, with crisp detailing still visible in the folds of the drapery and facial features. It is a compact but powerful survivor of 17th‑century decorative woodcarving.
