This hand-turned wooden platter comes from the Swat Valley in northern Pakistan. It was made in the twentieth century, in the manner of an eighteenth-century turned platter.

It is of shallow, open form with a broad, gently rounded rim. The interior is centred by incised turned rings, and the underside has a turned foot ring. The surface has darkened to a mellow, greyish-brown tone with a soft, worn sheen, giving it the appearance of considerable age. Shrinkage across the grain has drawn the platter into a pleasing ovoid form, some 1½ inches wider in one direction than the other, as is typical of turned wooden platters.

The woodworkers of the Swat Valley have a long and distinguished tradition of carving and turning. Its turners in particular became adept at reproducing the forms of earlier treen, and platters such as this are now found in many Western interiors. This example was made to evoke an earlier piece and should be enjoyed as a decorative object in that spirit, rather than as a period antique.

It is an appealing size for everyday use and display. It would suit a dresser, a kitchen shelf or a table as a dish for fruit, bread or a candle, and would pair well with other turned wooden dishes.

Provenance: Swat Valley, Pakistan. 20th century, made in the 18th-century manner.
