A rare and evocative Georgian naval leather-and-copper fire bucket, boldly inscribed “VICTORY” beneath a GR cypher—the royal monogram of King George III. This firmly places the bucket in the Nelson / Trafalgar era, aligning perfectly with the period of HMS Victory’s most famous service.

The bucket retains its original blackened-leather body, hand‑stitched construction, and copper‑reinforced, banded, and riveted rim and foot. The GR is clearly visible in the image, painted in the correct serifed style used on Royal Navy equipment of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A number appears below, although it is so worn that the numerals cannot be confirmed aside from the first, which is the number "1". The surface shows deep, honest patina: worn paint, oxidised and polished copper, and the layered texture of a working naval artefact.

This is exactly the type of fire‑fighting equipment carried aboard wooden warships during the Napoleonic period, where fire was a constant threat. Ship‑marked examples — especially those referencing Victory, Nelson’s flagship — are exceptionally scarce.

A powerful, authentic piece of Georgian naval history with superb visual presence.

Provenance: This fire bucket bears the painted ship name “VICTORY” together with the crowned GR cypher of King George III, identifying it as official equipment issued to the Royal Navy during the late 18th to early 19th century. Buckets of this type were carried aboard wooden warships for fire‑fighting, powder‑room safety, and general deck duties. The crowned GR monogram confirms manufacture under the reign of George III (1760–1820), aligning with the service period of HMS Victory during the Napoleonic Wars and the Battle of Trafalgar.

The bucket formed part of the ship’s marked equipment inventory, with the painted titling ensuring that gear remained with its designated vessel during refits and harbour servicing. Surviving examples with clear ship identification are rare, owing to heavy use, exposure to salt air, and the perishable nature of leather. This example has passed through private hands following deaccession from naval stores in the 19th century and has since remained in a UK‑based collection of maritime and Nelson‑era artefacts, based in Nottinghamshire, until its acquisition by us.

Material: Leather and copper.

Condition: Original leather body with deep, age‑consistent patina. The copper rim and base have been polished, but also have some stable verdigris. “VICTORY” titling and GR cypher, with numerals below, albeit worn. No modern repainting or over‑restoration. Structurally sound; excellent display presence.
