A beautifully honest George III period wooden trug, carved from a single piece of timber and retaining its original worn paint. These early trugs were indispensable domestic tools, used for carrying produce, kitchen goods, or household items, and very few survive with such integrity.

This example has a wonderfully tactile surface, shaped by long use and time. The interior shows the soft, smooth wear of repeated handling, while the exterior retains traces of its original russet paint. An old staple repair speaks to its working life — a practical mend made by someone who valued and relied upon it.

The trug is monogrammed and dated 1800, adding a rare personal touch and firmly anchoring it to the late 18th century. Its proportions are generous, with a pleasing oval form and a gentle rise to the ends, giving it both sculptural presence and decorative versatility.

A superb piece of early English treen with real soul — functional history elevated by age, wear, and quiet beauty.
