A good George III brass chamberstick of so-called "frying pan" form, English, late 18th century, circa 1770–1800.
The wide, shallow circular drip pan is raised with a hand-rolled rim for strength, centred by a cylindrical candle socket with trumpet-flared nozzle. The socket is fitted with a sliding ejector, operated by a shaped crescent thumb-piece riding in a slot to the stem — a practical Georgian refinement allowing the spent stub to be pushed clear without burnt fingers. The socket is secured beneath the pan by an octagonal brass nut, peened over the central bolt in the pre-industrial manner.
The long, flat, gently tapering handle terminates in a pierced hanging hole. It is fixed to the pan with two substantial hand-hammered copper rivets — honest workshop construction throughout, entirely by hand.
Chambersticks of this form lit the last journey of the day, carried from parlour to bedchamber, the broad pan catching the drips en route. This example survives in excellent structural condition, with no repairs, retaining a warm, mellow patina and traces of old wax to the socket — exactly as it should be.
