What was The Grand Tour?
Art, antiquity and architecture: the Grand Tour provided an opportunity to discover the cultural wonders of Europe and beyond.
Popular throughout the 18th century, this extended journey was seen as a rite of passage for mainly young, aristocratic English men.
As well as marvelling at artistic masterpieces, Grand Tourists brought back souvenirs to commemorate and display their journeys at home.
This carved classical limestone fragment collected on the Grand Tour depicts a male torso and has been attributed as Greco-Cypriot in origin, the drapery indicated by vertical incisions, the right hand folded across the body, circa 480 - 310 B.C.
Presented on a later marble plinth base.
This would make an excellent adornment to a gentleman's library collection.
Provenance - Ex Alison Barker Collection.
Condition - surface wear is commensurate with age (weathered). Please refer to the images. This displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
