A charming early 19th century full-length profile portrait of a society gentleman by a follower of Richard Dighton (1795–1880).
Finely painted in watercolour with the addition of graphite and gum arabic to intensify the black.
The sitter and artist are unknown.
The subject is portrayed in a rural river-side setting in side-profile with collared shirt, blue stock, waistcoat, blue tail-coat, trousers and leather shoes. He wears grey gloves, his right hand holding a top hat. His left hand placed at the top of his hip.
The profile portraits for which Richard Dighton became famous are considered predecessors of the "Vanity Fair style" of the late 19th century. His work played an important role in the transition between painted portraiture and photography.
Provenance - Found in North Yorkshire, England.
Condition -.Presented behind glass in its original gilt-wood frame. Please refer to the images. Some foxing and discolouration are evident to the painting and are commensurate with age. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
