A large late 17th Century English School antique oil on canvas portrait of an aristocratic lady gesturing towards a red squirrel. The lady portrayed in a garden setting, wearing a red silk dress with white chemise, sitting on a seat covered with a blue velvet robe, her right hand gesturing towards a red squirrel. The squirrel could be interpreted as a symbol of obedience and personal restraint.
The sitter and artist are unknown albeit the portrait has been undertaken by a very accomplished hand and has been influenced by the portraitist, Michael Dahl.
Presented in a period ebonised frame.
Provenance - Unknown. Sourced within the North East of England.
Condition - Cleaned and relined. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
