A delightful early 19th-Century antique oil on board painting entitled "The Wine Glass" by a follower of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675).
Dutch School. Painted by an unknown hand.
The work contains the conventions of genre painting of the Delft School developed by Pieter de Hooch in the late 1650s. It contains figures situated in a brightly lit and spacious interior, while its architectural space is highly defined. The figures are set in the middle ground rather than the more usual foreground, drinking at a table, their spaniel looking on. A painting hangs on the wall and a copper wine cooler stands on the floor.
After the original painting by Vermeer also entitled "The Wine Glass". The original is an oil-on-canvas painted c.1660, held in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. It portrays a seated woman and a standing man drinking in an interior setting.
Our offering is presented in its original time-worn gilt-gesso frame.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - Please refer to the images. There is a vertical split to the panel that has been repaired historically and cannot be seen from the front. The paint surface has significant craquelure commensurate with age. This is stable. There are losses to the period frame as mentioned. The painting displays well and is nice to see a frame where it has been left unrestored. This adds to its charm in our opinion. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
