Step back into the elegance of the 18th century with this compelling antique oil on canvas portrait. Depicting a head and shoulders study of an aristocratic young man, the sitter remains unknown, adding a layer of mystery to this handsome artwork.
Key Features:
- Period Style: The subject is captured wearing a fashionable wig, a crisp white stock, and a rich brown jacket, reflecting the Georgian aesthetic.
- Artistic Influence: Though unsigned and the artist is unknown, the portrait is executed by a very accomplished hand and displays a clear stylistic influence of William Hogarth (1697–1764). We attribute this work to a "Follower of Hogarth," meaning it was created in the manner of the named master, either during his lifetime or later.
- Presentation: The painting is housed in a magnificent period gilt gesso frame, featuring corner spandrels beautifully decorated with foliage and acorns, enhancing its historical impact.
- Provenance: The pine stretcher on the verso bears an old, albeit illegible, inscription.
Condition & History:
This antique has a rich history and has been historically cleaned and re-lined. As expected with a piece of this age, there is significant age-related craquelure (fine pattern of cracking) across the paint surface.
