Follower of Augustus Pugin (1812-1852) - Rare Pair of Mid 19th Century Antique Walnut Gothic Revival Hall Chairs, Each Carved With The Symbol of Saint Mark
A rare pair of Mid-19th Century antique walnut Gothic revival hall chairs.
Heavily influenced by the renowned British Gothic revival architect, Augustus Pugin.
We have never come across a pair of hall chairs of this standard. These must have been made for an incredibly wealthy 19thC house.
Both chairs are identical. The back support has an arching cresting rail, inset with carved-scrolling foliate detail. The edges are decorated with dentil moulding. Set above a tracery panel with a large roundel incorporating daggers above elongated lancets, flanked by columns.
The plank seat board to each is carved with the symbol of Saint Mark, represented by a winged lion, his right paw raised over a book.
Below, the front leg supports are again in the form of an arcaded frieze inset with the same foliate pattern as the cresting rail, together with a tracery roundel that unites the two turned columnar legs.
The front legs are united to the back planked support (which is of plain form) by a pair of tracery aprons.
Condition - good overall as per the images. There is some surface wear commensurate with age. Overall, these chairs are of exceptional quality.
Size: Width 38cm x Depth 47 cm x Back Height 98 cm x Seat Height 41.3 cm (15" x 18 1/2" x 38 1/2" x 16 1/4")
