This finely hand-carved and hand-painted wooden relief depicts the face of Christ, crowned with thorns, an image traditionally known as Ecce Homo (“Behold the Man”). Probably of Tyrolean or Bavarian origin, dating to around 1750, the piece embodies the highest order of devotional craftsmanship.
The carving shows remarkable detail in the features, enhanced by traces of the original polychromy and softened by a warm, aged patina. On the reverse, a Latin inscription reads: “Cœlitus oratorum lumine comitante favente... Hans Stalwartis hanc effigiem exsculpsit. Ornamenta erat et Navous.”
This translates roughly as: “With the heavenly light of those who pray and under divine favour, Hans Stalwartis sculpted this image. It was an ornament (or decoration) of [Navous / possibly a chapel or place name].”
The inscription suggests the work was created by a craftsman named Hans Stalwartis, possibly for a small chapel or private oratory, giving the piece both artistic and devotional significance.
Provenance: Tyrolean/Bavarian, c.1750.
Material: Hand‑carved wood with polychrome paint.
Subject: Christ crowned with thorns (Ecce Homo).
Condition: Good antique condition with natural age wear, traces of original colour, and an inscription on the reverse.
Dimensions: 26 × 20 × 3 cm (10.2 × 7.9 × 1.2 in)
In summary, this relief is more than a devotional object — it is a tangible link to the faith and artistry of 18th-century Central Europe. Its expressive carving, original polychromy, and inscribed provenance make it a rare and meaningful addition to any collection of religious or continental antiques.
