Ex-Eila Grahame Collection – Rare Mid 17th Century Antique Herb Chopper, Dated “1648”

A rare 17th Century, dated, herb chopping board in completely original condition.

With shaped fruitwood board (one end with whale tale decoration and carry handle to the base) and an elongated blade dated "1648" with a decorative hinge to one end featuring a stylised head, the other end with turned wooden handle. There is a raised edge to one side to prevent the chopped herbs from falling off the board.

Provenance: Eila Grahame (B. 1935 - D. 2009) was a renowned London-based antique dealer, her shop located in Church Street, Kensington.

She was proud of her descent from the Grahams of Duntrune and Claverhouse, descendants of "Bonny Dundee", and further back of Robert Graham, who married the daughter of Robert III, King of Scotland, in 1466. Although her great-great-grandmother was the last to be born a Graham, her father had painted under the name Lewis Grahame.

She was renowned for her own collection of early British glass and pottery.

She had an affinity not just with London but also Ufford in Suffolk where she continued to own a cottage until just three years prior to her death. She was buried at Ufford church, but, faithful to her Scots roots, she left her own wonderful collection of pre-1700 British glass and pottery to find a permanent home in Scotland.

Condition - as per images.  Good overall. Some surface wear to the board where the blade has seen many years of chopping!

Size: Length 70 cm x Width 29 cm (Length of wooden board including handle 27 1/2" x Width 11 1/2")
